Slow standard broadband??
Hey all
I am from the UK and have set up the Usa 2 server for my vpn needs.
Having problems with my broadband speed when not connected though.
Any pages take forever to load! Sometimes, once i'm on a site/forum it will go back to normal speeds, but if i go somewhere new - bang - it happens again and take 10/15 secs to load.
If i start the VPN it's back to it's normal high speeds [if you can call 8meg fast.......].
Any ideas why and how i can solve?? Don't want to have to be dialed into the vpn constantly as this plays havoc with some UK sites.
Uk user, macbook, wireless with 02 broadband.

Dear Bells,
So basically connecting with VPN improves your speed. When you are on your ISP only it reduces connections speed.
Although it's something related with your ISP but i would recommend you adjust your MTU settings consulting for the best value with your ISP. Incorrect MTU settings could cause this slowness in speed.
Kind regards,

Correct - not using VPN = slowdown!
What are MTU settings??
-
Dear Bells,
Only the ISP reps. could advise of MTU values. MTU is basically acronym for Maximum Transmission Unit which is the length/amount of data that you can send over a packet at a time. If packet is too large for your ISP or network to contain it could result in extremely slow speeds as lots of data is lost. In such cases reducing MTU is advised so as to make sure packets are not lost / diminish
Hope this helps,

Thanks for replying.
Not sure if it is that though. My girlfriends laptop [windows dell xp] is runnign fine, no lag or slow load times.
My iPad works super fast too.
Seems it's just my macbook [wireless]and mac mini [ethernet] that are running super slow.
These are the only 2 to be running the VPN dialer.
Not too happy, may have to stop subscribing if there is no way of sorting.

Dear Bell,
Previously you said that without VPN your speed goes down? Now this has reversed or what?
Please update me.

When the VPN is not connected, it seems to turn make connections very slow.
It takes 15 seconds to load a webpage.
It only seems to be affecting my macbook and mac mini though - the only 2 machines with the VPN setting loaded.
I can't run VPN all the time as some UK sites dont like it.

Dear Bells,
Loading VPN settings cannot affect your ISP speeds. If you wish to check you may remove the VPN settings from your MAC and see if it's working fine without it.
Because when you configure VPN you are basically adding a new connection and NOT altering existing connections.

Problem solved!
Turns out it was my ISP's crap DNS servers.
Changed them and my macs are flying again. Thanks for trying to diagnose
